Short answer

The Masai Mara has five public road gates on the Narok side (Sekenani, Talek, Musiara, Oloolaimutia and Sand River) and two in the Mara Triangle (Oloololo and Purungat Bridge), plus airstrips at Keekorok, Ol Kiombo, Musiara and Mara Serena. Sekenani is 87 km of tarmac from Narok, the last town with full services. The Mara River divides the county-run Central Mara from the Triangle.

Narok County publishes no visitor map. Its Management Plan 2023-2032 carries the zoning maps that decide where you may drive off-road, and the Mara Conservancy describes the Triangle's gates and routes on its driving page. The map on this page and the coordinates below come from OpenStreetMap, checked on 6 October 2026.

Reading the Masai Mara map

The Mara River splits the reserve. East of it lies the Central Mara, run by Narok County, with five public gates and most of the lodges; west of it lies the Mara Triangle, run by the Mara Conservancy, between the river, the Oloololo escarpment and the Tanzanian border. Purungat Bridge in the south is the crossing between the two, and the drive from Oloololo Gate to Purungat Bridge on the Triangle's main road takes a little over an hour at 50 km/h.

The boundary is not fenced. The conservancies to the north and east look like more of the same on a map and are outside the reserve, and the Tanzania border in the south is marked with white beacons. Do not cross it: the Sand River gate is a reserve gate, not an immigration post.

Which gate should you use?

  • Sekenani: from Narok on tarmac, for the Central Mara camps and, across the reserve via Keekorok and Purungat Bridge, for Mara Serena.
  • Talek: for the camps along the Talek River and the conservancies to the north-east.
  • Musiara: for the Governors' camps and Mara North, via Aitong.
  • Oloololo: for the Triangle and the camps below and on the escarpment, via the Aitong route from Narok or the Kisii route from the west.
  • Oloolaimutia and Sand River: for the camps on the south-eastern edge and near the Tanzanian border.

Before you set off

  • Fill up in Narok. Fuel inside is sold only at camps and lodges and sometimes runs out.
  • Save the coordinates offline; signal is patchy away from the gates and the camps.
  • Rivers flood fast. In March 2026 Purungat gate was underwater and the Triangle was cut off for days; ask at the gate before you try a drift.
