Money, honestly

What a Masai Mara safari costs in 2026

The park fee is the biggest line in almost every Mara budget. A foreign adult pays $200 a day from July to December and $100 from January to June under the Narok County Finance Act 2023, so the month you choose moves the bill more than the tent or lodge you choose. This page prices three real trips for two people and three nights, and shows where every dollar goes.

If you only want the answer

Two people driving themselves from Nairobi and camping three nights at a public campsite in the Mara Triangle in August pay about $1,582: $1,200 in entry fees, $240 in camping, about $23 in vehicle fees and about $119 of diesel. The same trip in March costs about $982, because the entry fee halves on 1 January. Three nights at Basecamp Masai Mara with flights come to about $5,020 in August, and three nights at Governors' Camp with flights about $8,338.

Budget one: self-drive camping in the Mara Triangle

About $1,582 for two people over three nights in August, and three quarters of it is the entry fee. The three public campsites, Oloololo, Iseiya and Eluai, all sit in the Mara Triangle, take no booking and charge no booking fee, so you pay only the county's $40 per non-resident adult per night on top of the daily ticket. Oloololo has toilets, hot showers and a kitchen shelter; Iseiya and Eluai have long-drop toilets, and at Eluai you bring your own water and firewood.

Do the same trip in March and the entry line drops from $1,200 to $600, which brings the total to about $982. Nothing else changes: camping, the vehicle charge and the diesel stay the same all year. The Triangle is also where self-drive is clearest. The Mara Conservancy says any 4x4 will do, while on the Narok side a June 2024 memo banned private vehicles from game drives and has not been clarified since.

The budget counts three fee days for three nights. A day is 06:00 to 18:00, and in 2024 Narok County said road departures must be out by 10:00, so a slow last morning can add a fourth day of $400 for the two of you.

Nairobi to Oloololo Gate is 253 km by road (OSRM, October 2026). Fill up in Narok: inside the reserve fuel is sold only at camps and lodges, and the Mara Conservancy warns of shortages.

Budget two: a mid-range camp on the Talek, flying in

About $5,020 for two people over three nights in August at Basecamp Masai Mara, a tented camp on the community bank of the Talek River just outside Talek Gate. Its 2026 ground package is $500 per person per night from July to September and $300 in the mid and low seasons, with full board, shared day game drives, a bird walk and airstrip transfers included. Drinks other than water are extra, and so is the reserve fee, which the camp's own sheet quotes at $100 and $200 per 12-hour day.

The flights here are the cheapest published Wilson to Mara fare found for 2026: Mombasa Air Safari at $370 return plus a $40 fuel surcharge per person. Safarilink charges $425 return before taxes. Move the same stay to June and the bill falls to about $3,220: $300 a night at the camp, $100 a day at the gate.

Basecamp Masai Mara, ground package, high season (2 × $500, 2026 rate sheet)$1,000$3,000

Mombasa Air Safari, Wilson to Mara return (2 × $410 incl. surcharge, 2026 schedule)$820
Total±$5,020

Basecamp Masai Mara sits outside the reserve, so on a day you stay on the community side you owe no reserve fee. The budget assumes you drive into the reserve on all three days.

Budget three: fly in to Governors' Camp on the Mara River

About $8,338 for two people over three nights in August at Governors' Camp, which has stood on the same site by the Musiara Marsh inside the reserve since 1972. Its 2026 rate sheet, revised on 7 September 2026, charges $998 per person per night from 1 July to 31 October on its FB+ basis: full board, house drinks, laundry, VAT, transfers from Musiara airstrip and two or three excursions a day. Park fees and a $50 per person per night community fee are extra.

Safarilink flies Wilson to the Mara three times a day for $425 return before taxes, with a strict 15 kg soft-bag limit per person. The same three nights from 1 January to 31 March cost $623 per person per night at the camp and $100 a day at the gate, about $5,488 in total; April and May drop to $453.

A camp in Mara North, Olare Motorogi or Naboisho adds a conservancy fee of $130 per adult per night in 2026 instead, and charges the reserve fee only on days you drive into the reserve.

Paying the fee, and where it goes

Lodge guests usually pay the reserve fee through their camp. Self-drivers pay at the gate: in the Mara Triangle by M-Pesa or card only, from KAPS staff at Oloololo Gate, Purungat Bridge or the Mara Serena airstrip; on the Narok side to KAPS at the gates, where cash in dollars and shillings was still taken in 2024/25. eCitizen does not sell Mara tickets.

In the Triangle the money is split 55% to Narok County, 37.5% to the Mara Conservancy and 7.5% to KAPS, according to the Conservancy. Narok County collected KSh 5.9 billion through the KAPS system in the year to 30 June 2025, the Senate's county accounts committee heard in February 2026.

Where the money surprises people

  • November and December cost $200 a day, the same as August. In law the high season runs from 1 July to 31 December, wet months included.
  • June is the best-value month in the calendar: dry, with herds sometimes arriving late in the month, and still on the $100 rate until 30 June.
  • A day is 06:00 to 18:00, not 24 hours. Afternoon arrival plus a late-morning departure can mean two full fees for one night.
  • Children aged 8 and under enter free and pay nothing for camping; 9 to 17 pay $50 a day and $20 a night camping.
  • A conservancy camp can be cheaper on fees than a reserve camp: $130 a night conservancy fee and no $200 reserve fee on days you stay out of the reserve.
  • The Triangle's private campsites cost a non-refundable KSh 15,000 booking fee for private visitors, plus KSh 5,000 a night for two rangers.
