Month by month
Masai Mara in September
September keeps the peak prices of August with fewer people. The migration is still in Kenya in most years, the predators are working the herds, and the storms that start to build late in the dry season can push the wildebeest back and forth across the border.
If you only want the answer
September is prime in the Masai Mara: 28.2°C days, 15.2°C nights and about 21 mm of rain in the model, though the Triangle measured 130 mm in September 2025. Herds come and go with the storms and predator action is strong. Visitor numbers drop after August, 9,786 non-residents in the Triangle in September 2025, while lodge rates and the $200 park fee stay at peak.
Masai Mara weather in September: dry on average, stormy in practice
The model gives September 28.2°C by day, 15.2°C at night and about 21 mm of rain on 6 days. The figure is approximate, and September 2025 shows by how much: the Triangle's gauge recorded 130 mm, and sporadic thunderstorms through the month confused the wildebeest, which left and returned.
By the end of September 2025 the Triangle had already measured 1,026.5 mm for the year. In late September 2026 the Mara Conservancy was grading roads and clearing drains and culverts in anticipation of El Niño rains.
Herds on the move and the hippo pool closure
September is a month of movement. The herds that left after August storms can return, and with them come lions, hyaenas and crocodiles at the river. Guides track the herds daily, so a flexible plan with time near the river pays.
In September 2025 the Chief Park Warden closed the hippo pool near Mara Bridge, the one spot where visitors traditionally left their vehicles with a ranger, after a video showed people on foot disrupting a crossing. Whether it has reopened was not published at 6 October 2026.
Peak rates, smaller crowds
The Triangle counted 9,786 non-resident adults in September 2025, almost the same as the 9,760 of September 2024 and well below August. Lodge rates do not drop: Governors' Camp charges $998 per person and Kicheche Mara North $995 until 31 October.
Angama's 2027 group rates make September their most expensive month, at $1,935 per person, the only month in that top band. Porini's Mara packages include one day of reserve entry up to 30 September.
