Month by month

Masai Mara in January

January is the month the Mara gets cheaper. The festive peak ends in the first days of the year, the county's park fee halves on 1 January, and the resident predators have the short grass to themselves while the migrating herds are far south in Tanzania.

If you only want the answer

January is good value in the Masai Mara: 27.1°C days, 14.5°C nights and about 60 mm of rain in the climate model, though wetter in some years. The park fee drops to $100 per non-resident adult per day on 1 January, and lodges move from festive peak to mid-season rates in the first week. There is no migration; the draw is resident lions, cheetah and elephant on short grass with few vehicles.

Masai Mara weather in January: the short rains fade

The climate normals give January 27.1°C in the afternoon, 14.5°C at night and about 60 mm of rain over 11 rain days. That rain figure is a model value and approximate: the Mara's rain gauges record about a third more than the model across the year, and a second model run gave only 37 mm for January, so the honest answer is somewhere in a wide range.

Travel calendars call January dry. A 2018 study of 15 gauges in the Mara counts the whole of November to June as the wet season, so expect showers and the odd heavy storm, with mornings usually fine for driving.

Resident game on short grass, and migrants in the trees

The migrating wildebeest are in Tanzania, but the Mara is far from empty. Lions, which live here all year, the resident wildebeest herd on the eastern plains, elephant, buffalo, giraffe and cheetah are all on the short grass, which makes January one of the easier months for predator viewing.

Birders arrive at a good time. Palearctic migrants such as white stork, Caspian plover and European roller are present in the northern winter months, and the reserve's list runs to more than 470 species according to the Mara Conservancy.

The fee halves on 1 January and the lodges follow

Under the Narok County Finance Act 2023, the non-resident adult fee drops from $200 to $100 per day on 1 January and stays there until 30 June. For a couple on a three-night stay that alone is a saving of $600 against December.

Lodges step down a few days later. Governors' Camp charges $623 per person from 1 January 2026 against $998 over Christmas, and Kicheche Mara North moves from its $995 peak rate to $730 on 3 January. If your dates can move, skip the first two days of the month. Safarilink counts January as high season, at the same $260 one-way fare from Nairobi it charges all year.
