Month by month
Masai Mara in October
October is the tail of the migration season. The herds have usually thinned, some return for a final spell, the short rains may begin, and the crowds fall away while peak lodge rates hold until the last day of the month.
If you only want the answer
October is a shoulder month in the Masai Mara: the warmest days of the year at 28.8°C, 15.9°C nights and about 28 mm of rain in the model. In 2025 the herds came back in early October and a few thousand stayed in the Triangle until the 30th. Visitors fall to 7,023 non-residents in the Triangle (October 2025), but lodge rates stay at peak to 31 October and the park fee at $200.
Masai Mara weather in October: the warmest month
The model puts October at 28.8°C by day, the warmest month of the year, with 15.9°C nights and about 28 mm of rain on 7 days. As always the rain figure is approximate, and a second model run gave 38 mm; the short rains can begin before the month is out.
October 2025 brought something rarer than rain. Three young lionesses in the Triangle recovered from poisoning and were released on 15 October, according to the Mara Conservancy, a reminder that lion poisoning is still a threat here.
The last of the migration
In 2025 the wildebeest came back to the Triangle in early October, and a few thousand remained until 30 October before most of the rest left in early November. Some years are later and some earlier, so treat October as a month with a fair chance of the herds and no certainty.
With the herds thinning, the resident predators take over again and the plains carry fewer vehicles.
The last month of peak rates
The Triangle counted 7,023 overseas visitors in October 2025, about two fifths of the August figure. Prices do not follow the crowds: Governors' Camp charges $998 per person and Kicheche Mara North $995 until 31 October 2026, and both drop on 1 November.
The park fee stays at $200 per non-resident adult per day until 31 December. Operators asked Narok County in July 2026 to cut the October to December fee, and no change has been published. Angama's 2027 group rates put October back in their middle band at $1,290 per person.
