Month by month

Masai Mara in April

April is the green season at its deepest. It is the wettest month of the long rains in the model, the quietest month for visitors and the cheapest at every lodge that publishes seasons, and it is the month when a good share of the conservancy camps lock up.

If you only want the answer

April is the green season in the Masai Mara: 26.3°C days, 15.4°C nights and about 113 mm of rain on 14 days in the model, the wettest month of the long rains. Lodge rates are at their lowest, Governors' Camp at $453 per person in 2026, and the reserve is at its quietest. The trade-off is long grass, dispersed game, storm-damaged roads and closed camps, including Rekero and several Kicheche and Porini camps.

Masai Mara weather in April: the heart of the long rains

The model puts April at 26.3°C by day, 15.4°C at night and about 113 mm of rain over 14 days, the highest rainfall of the long rains. As with every monthly figure here it is approximate, and probably low: the Mara Conservancy measured 616 mm in the Triangle between January and the end of April 2025.

Storms do real damage in this month. On 10 April 2025 heavy rain caused extensive flooding in the Triangle, and the Conservancy reported severe storms damaging roads and infrastructure. Self-drivers get stuck in April more than in any other month.

The quietest month, and closed camps

April is probably the quietest month of the year. The Triangle counted 3,041 non-resident visitors in what appears to be April 2025, against 16,718 in August that year; the report does not name the month, so treat the figure as a guide.

Check your camp before anything else. Kicheche Mara North and Bush Olare are closed from 1 April to 23 May 2026 and Kicheche Valley from 10 April to 1 June, Asilia's Rekero Camp is closed for April and May, and Porini gives tentative closure dates of 16 April to 31 May for its Mara camps.

The lowest rates of the year

Governors' Camp, inside the reserve, charges $453 per person sharing from 1 April to 31 May 2026, about 27 per cent less than in January to March. The park fee is $100 per non-resident adult per day. Angama's 2027 group rates also put March to May in their cheapest band.

Flights change too. Safarilink's low season starts on 1 April at the same $260 one-way fare, and Airkenya's connection between the Mara and the Serengeti via Migori and Tarime does not operate from 1 April to 20 May.
